Editorial Note:  The layout of this case is anomalous, causing a number of ambiguities. Elizabeth Brock is initially presented as the subject, but later notes make it clear the subject is her husband. The role of ‘mr tailor’ is also a puzzle: it may be that this in fact means ‘master tailor’ and refers to Mr Brock’s profession.
