Editorial Note:  The precise nature of the roles played by the participants in this case is far from clear. It is certain that Forman was visited by two women, to wit John Ellis’s mother and Mrs Lockly, and that the question was about John Ellis. One of the two women was a poulterer’s wife, but it is not clear which; one of them was resident at ‘the cradel’ (presumably a tavern), and one of them (possibly the same one) had been formerly resident in Plymouth. The metadata given below is accordingly very conjectural.
